A gunman named as Omar Mateen on Sunday stormed a gay nightclub in
Florida and killed 50 people in what has been described as the worst
attack since 9/11.
The US government and security operatives since then have set the
wheels in motion in investigating the incident.
On assumption, if this happens in Nigeria, what would have been the
government's reaction?
Here are some possibilities:
1. Investigation committee set up
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI within hours was able to
detect the track record of the terrorist claiming he has been on
investigation list twice. Imagine this happened in Nigeria, our dear
government will by now be thinking of setting up committees which will
deliver its report in the next 3 months after which another committee
will be set up in the national assembly to review the report. The
presidency will also set up a committee to review the recommendations
of the assembly and this will continue on and on.
2. Late Presidential Address
The white house responded to the killings early hours of Sunday with
President Obama describing it as "an act of terror." For such incident
to earn a presidential address in Nigeria, it has to be fatal, i mean
very fatal. The address most likely will come from a presidential aide
and this will be days after the event if not weeks.
3. Blame Killings on Opposition
An average politician in Nigeria will blame the country's misfortune
on opposition. Previously, the federal government-led APC government
has blamed fuel scarcity, insurgency, power failure and several others
on the past PDP government. Such would have been the case in this
situation. 'They sent him to attack the club to discredit our
government' would have become an anthem by now.
4. Subdue Terrorist's Parent to Torture
The father of the 'mentally unstable' Omar, Seddique Mateen said in an
interview that he does not think his son is radicalized, that he did
not notice anything irregularity in him. His statement has sparked off
speculations of why the killings, subsequently instigating further
investigations. However, in Nigeria, such important and useful
information would have eluded us because by now, the parent and
relative of the boy will be drinking garri in police net.
5. Mass Arrest
This should have even be the number one on this list. Nigerian Police
by now would have announced: 'we have made some arrest in connection
with the attack. We have also arrested some of his accomplices.'
However, when you get to the root of these arrest, they are merely
indiscriminate and unwarranted arrest of innocent people.
6. State of Emergency
The government is pro-active in verbal responsibilities. The
government would have declared a state of emergency and placed curfew
on the state. It only take an announcement.
7. Reactions and Counter-reaction from CAN, Muslims
The social media will be flooded with comments by now. CAN would have
issued a statement demanding government protect the Christians. A
certain Christian would have cursed Muslims on his Facebook and
Twitter pages, an epic reply would have followed and the trend would
have continued.
