HUNGRY THIEF STEALS POT OF RICE ON FIRE IN EBONYI

A middle-aged woman identified as Agnes on Sunday in Abakaliki lost the pot of rice she was cooking to thieves.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited Agnes’s residence behind Nnodo Secondary School, Amike-Aba on Monday reports that she was still in shock over the incident.

It took repeated appeals by the correspondent to make Agnes talk, as she maintained that her husband had barred her from speaking further on the issue to avoid negative attention to the family.

“I came back from a village-meeting late on Sunday and put the rice on fire so that my family could have their dinner and eat the remnant on Monday morning.

“This apartment, as you can see, has no kitchen so we cook in the space in front of the house, likewise other occupants of the building,” she said.

Agnes said that as she went inside her room to fetch some condiments, she was delayed by the attention she had to give to her crying child.

“I gave attention to my child who was crying and by the time I came out to continue cooking, the pot of rice had vanished, with the stove still enkindled.

“After I recovered from the shock, I started screaming which attracted my husband, family members and neighbours who were all as stupefied.

“When it was established that no occupant of the building took the pot, it dawned on us that the act was perpetrated by a thief who exploited the vulnerability of the improvised kitchen,” she said.

The woman declined further comments but her neigbour, Justin Mbam-Egbe, noted that the situation had re-awakened security consciousness among the occupants of the house.

“This is the first theft case we are experiencing and we will henceforth be security conscious to avert future occurrences,” he said.

A private security consultant in Abakaliki, Dr John Odikwa, blamed such incident on the current economic recession in the country.

“The country has degenerated to a level that people now steal pots of rice and soup and with the yuletide approaching, the society should be ready for serious security challenges.

“The Federal Government should take immediate measures to alleviate the sufferings of the people to prevent total breakdown of law and order,” he said.

SOUTH AFRICAN UNIVERSITY TO INTRODUCE B.SC IN WITCHCRAFT

According to reports making rounds, South African Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande has announced plans to have witchcraft included in thecurriculum from 2018, giving students who wish to get an education on witchcraft the chance to do so in the country’s universities.

The minister made this known while addressing representatives from student unions around the country, adding that the introduction of the course is aimed at learning skills which are peculiar to people who practice witchcraft.

 Announcing the bizarre move, he urged future university entrees to consider taking Witchcraft as a course. .

Hear him: “There is a lot we can learn from witchcraft, like how they fly in that winnowing basket. Imagine if we learn that skill. It will eradicate traffic jams and everyone will just get in their basket and fly. It also means we will not be importing fuel anymore.” He said

Ripon Sarker is suffering from a rare skin condition caused by human papillomaviruses, an infection which results in the growth of scaly warts.
The 7-year-old boy from Bangladeshi, who was first affected when he was only three months old was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment for the first time on August 20, as his family were too poor to afford the medical attention required.

The warts has grown to the extent that the boy cannot even walk or eat by himself. Fortunately, doctors are hopeful that his hands and feet are operable. They explained that the child's family is extremely poor and the boy has lacked the nutrition necessary for his physical development, which contributed to the disease.

The partnership between the naval command and residents of the area led to the arrest of the suspects.

Salami Olalekan, 28, has been arrested by the Nigerian Navy for impersonating as a soldier and defrauding an unsuspecting man in Kwara State.

This was disclosed on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, by Navy Capt. Ibrahim Nurudeen, the commandant, Nigerian Navy School of Health Sciences in Offa, Kwara.

Olalekan was arrested with an accomplice for using an identity card registered with the Nigeria Army to extort money from an unsuspecting man.

According to Nurudeen, the chemistry between residents of the area and the naval command led to the arrest of the suspects, who were trying to cash money at the bank before their arrest.

“They disguised as army personnel to deceive their victim and in the process, collected a cheque for N20, 000 from him."

“They had also gone to the branch of the Union Bank in the community, in an attempt to cash the said amount."

“But for the security synergy that existed between the Navy and the community, they were promptly arrested.”

The men have been handed over to the army as investigation continues into the matter.

A UK father and son pair, Alan Derrick, 67, and Tom, 39 were on a leisurely walk on the beach when stumbled across a lump of whale vomit. What is news however is that the smelly lump could be worth a load of cash, £65000.
Engineer Tom picked up the grey waxy 'rock' and keen fisherman Alan thought it looked like super valuable 'whale poo' he had once seen in a newspaper.

Tests at Alan's home in Somerset confirmed it could be ambergris - a highly-prized but stinky substance used in the manufacture of perfume.

They have sent samples off to experts in Italy, New Zealand and France in the hope they will back-up their tests.

Speaking on how he made the astonishing find Alan said:

"The weather was not very good on Sunday so I decided not to go fishing and go for a walk instead.

"My son said 'I'll come with you' and when we were walking he came over to me and said 'what do you think this is dad?' "It weighs about 2.5lbs and is very dense and has a very pungent smell. 

"I said 'if that's what I think it is then guard it with your life'. 

"It smells terrible. It smells like walking into a very old damp building." Ambergis comes from whales and takes years to form, it's slimy, slurry texture is thought to protect the animal from hard and sharp objects it eats. 

It maybe smelly but it is highly prized in the perfume industry and is therefore dubbed 'floating gold'. Alan has put it up for sale on eBay with a £65000 price tag, until a buyer shows up, his valuable find is sitting safe in a safety box. 

If it proves to be the valuable substance Alan said Tom will take the cash and put it in a trust fund for his two-year-old son Matthew.

8 killed for alleged insulting Islam in Zamfara

Eight people have lost their lives during a mob action over an allegedly insult on the Islamic religion in Zamfara State.

About eight people have been killed by a mob in the Talata-Mafara community of Zamfara State after violence broke out over allegations of blasphemy against the Islam religion by a student of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, in the area.

The victims were killed after the mob set fire to a house where a man had hidden the offending student.

The student was alleged to have made a blasphemous statement against Islam and Prophet Muhammad and was allegedly attacked by the mob which beat him to a pulp and when the man identified only as Tajudeen attempted to rescue him and took him to hide in his house, the mob moved there and set the house on fire, killing other innocent people living there.

Reacting to the mob action, the State Governor, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, who called for an emergency Security Council meeting over the incident, expressed sadness and vowed that no stone will be left unturned until all those behind the act are brought to book.

Meanwhile, the police have imposed a 12-hour curfew in the community, from 7p.m. to 7a.m. daily, until further notice, warning that anyone caught violating the order would be prosecuted.

A self-acclaimed prophet who kept many people chained under the pretext of healing them of madness has been arrested in Lagos.

 

A self-proclaimed man of God, Prophet Emmanuel Adeyemi, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command following a tip-off that he had chained 28 mentally challenged people, including women and children, inside his apartment in the Oke-Ira, Ogba area of the state.

It was gathered that the police at the Area 'G' Division in Ogba had a report that a 17-year-old boy, Toba Adeyemi, who happens to be the son of the prophet, had been chained and locked up in the house at Oyingbo Unity Estate, Olamidun Close, in the area but when police operatives stormed the premises, they were shocked to meet not only Toba, but 27 other victims, chained and locked up in the house.

The victims the police rescued, according to reports from the Command, comprised 15 adults, both men and women, and 13 children, including males and females, all chained together.

A police source who was part of the rescue team said the suspect claimed that his son and the 27 others were deranged and he chained them to cure their madness.

“The report we initially received was that a boy, Toba (Adeyemi), was being chained down by his father, a self-proclaimed prophet, in the estate. But when we got there, it was more than just the boy. There were 27 others chained in various rooms in the apartment.

The suspect claims to be a spiritualist and a prophet. He said his work is to pray for sick people to get well.

He said the victims were sick and he had been praying for their healing. The suspect has some magical inscriptions on the wall of his house. The victims comprised six adult males, nine adult females, seven female children, and six male children.

The families of the victims have not shown up to identify them.”

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed the incident, added that the police had commenced investigations into whether the victims were mentally sick or not.

“A total of 28 persons were rescued from the suspect’s apartment. The man has been arrested and he is undergoing interrogation.

The command will get to the root of the matter. The police are also investigating to find out whether the victims are mentally sick or not.”

Health agency raise alert on fake alcohol circulation

The high rate of alcohol consumption is reportedly the reason for low productivity among Nigerian youths.

 

According to a recent announcement made by the National Agency for Food and Drug Control (NAFDAC), there is now a surge in the circulation of fake alcoholic drinks.

This was revealed by its director for Special Duties, Dr Abubakar Jimoh, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, August 23, 2016.

In the interview, Jimoh disclosed that the consumption of harmful alcoholic substances by the youths in the society has had an exponential effect on the increase on crime rates, as such drinks spur them to misbehave.

“Drinking alcohol is bad enough and people are always advised to take it in moderation; so, the danger associated with taking a fake drink can only be imagined,”

“We have found that the youths rely on such drinks to gather enough courage to commit all manners of atrocities like armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, killing and the rest."

To combat this, Jimoh explained that NAFDAC has increased its efforts in stopping activities that promotes drunkenness through raids and bylaws.

Focus has been in areas such as Edo and Delta States, who produce drinks that are known to harm vital organs of the body.

“We have, therefore, continued to intensify our campaigns and that has resulted into some states coming up with bylaws that banned some alcoholic beverages."

“We have also raided production and drinking points of some of these dangerous drinks, especially in Edo and Delta States, because the drinks have damaged many livers, kidneys and other vital organs of the body."

Speaking further on the menace of alcohol, the special duties director also commented that regular consumption has rendered many youths unproductive.

Agriculture is an area of economic growth that requires energy and youthfulness, but the circulation of harmful drinks have robbed the sector of the needed manpower.

“They have also led to the gradual decline in the health status of many youths and totally destroyed their capacity to contribute to societal development,”

“Farming requires a lot of energy– which is the asset of youths. The drinks destroy that energy, hence the need to rid society of them,” he said.
